Job Summary The Director for Infrastructure & Security has broad functional responsibilities for leading the staff focused on IT infrastructure for Student Affairs. This position serves as the senior staff member responsible for privacy and security, working with campus on issues of compliance and response to security events involving technology. This position has oversight for all infrastructure, desktop support, and security positions in SA Tech and is the direct supervisor of the Server and Desktop Infrastructure team for University Housing. This position is a member of the SA Tech leadership team and acts in the liaison role for the Parking Department.
Duties & Responsibilities - Supervises a team of technical staff members supporting University Housing including setting priorities, balancing conflicting demands and ensuring staff development.
- Plans and guides projects for system administration resources for University Housing
- Directs day-to-day operational needs for the server and desktop infrastructure for University Housing.
- Reviews processes and procedures to ensure a stable and consistent infrastructure for University Housing including the development of backup strategies and disaster recovery plans.
- Works with Technology Services at Illinois to manage telecommunications needs for University Housing.
- Leads efforts to coordinate infrastructure and system administration needs across Student Affairs for SA Tech.
- Investigates and plans for the use of campus services by the IT shared service.
- Acts as the hiring authority or delegates that responsibility for infrastructure staff including desktop support and security focused positions, for all of Student Affairs.
- Participates as a member of the Student Affairs Technology leadership team, providing expertise in infrastructure, desktop support, and security, as well as strategic vision as part of that collaborative team.
- Ensures that best practices are utilized to provide security for systems and data across Student Affairs.
- Leadership for IT security and privacy activities conducted by Student Affairs Technology staff.
- Coordination with campus security and privacy staff on policy and issues relevant to Student Affairs.
- Point person for Student Affairs during emergent events involving IT security and privacy and oversight for SA Tech staff responding to those events.
- Acts as the IT shared service liaison to the Parking department, working with the Director of Parking to understand their IT project and support needs.
- Represents Student Affairs as the leader for infrastructure and security with campus governance and initiatives including IT Council and enterprise service management.
- Works with Technology Services at Illinois and other campus IT units to support quality services for Student Affairs.
- Provides leadership oversight for the campus digital sign service.
- Perform other duties as assigned to further the mission of the shared service and the Auxiliary units.
Additional Physical Demands Most work will be accomplished in a typical office environment but travel to different locations around campus will be required. Due to project timelines and business needs, including on call responsibility for emergent issues, weekend and evening work may be required. This position is eligible for hybrid or in-person work environments.
Minimum Qualifications - Bachelor's degree.
- Ten (10) years of progressive experience in a technology department that included systems administration or technology infrastructure responsibilities.
- Experience with direct supervision of personnel.
- Experience leading or mentoring teams in a technology environment.
- Experience with supporting the Windows operating system for both server and desktop is required as well as familiarity supporting large departments dependent on multiple services such as: email, relational databases, endpoint management, and web hosting
- Demonstrated experience with security and privacy best practices for technology.
- Experience with compliance requirements one or more security and data management such as educational records (FERPA), patient health information (HIPAA), or payment card systems (PCI-DSS).
- Strong knowledge of industry developments, business practices, and technical details of supporting operations for an infrastructure with many servers, vendor systems, and desktop clients.
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with technical and non- technical personnel.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively supervise professional staff including team-building skills.
- Strong organization and time management skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work with and appreciate people from diverse backgrounds.
Preferred Qualifications - Master's degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, Technology management, or related field.
- Certifications in IT Service management, cybersecurity, or data management/data privacy.
- Experience with procurement.
- Experience with vendor relations.
- Experience in a higher education environment.
Appointment Information This is a 100% full-time Academic Professional position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after 3/1/2025.
The budgeted salary for this position is $130,000 to $150,000.
This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule (remote work and in-person work in Urbana-Champaign each week).
