General Summary:

Salish Kootenai College’s Wildlife and Fisheries Department seeks applicants to coordinate classroom, laboratory, and field research activities for the SKC Natural Resources programs. The successful incumbent will organize and maintain shared natural resource supplies, equipment, specimens, lab spaces, and storage areas. They will communicate with faculty, adjunct faculty, staff, and students to track and provide accessibility to equipment and supplies, and to replenish materials as needed. Supporting research activities such as assisting students, following sampling protocols, data entry and management, organize meetings, and otherwise assist the Research PI and Coordinator; as well as supporting teaching needs by setting up and putting away laboratory materials, assisting with class field trips, and providing general classroom support. The successful applicant will also engage in recruitment and educational activities for the department and community. Applicants with experience working with pollinators, and plant and animal identification skills and are especially encouraged to apply.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

Lab Management and Coordination (30%)

  • Oversee organization, cleanliness, and functionality of Natural Resources labs, classrooms, and storage spaces across departments.

  • Maintain a comprehensive digital inventory system for all supplies, specimens, and equipment in real time to ensure up to date records.

  • Serve as the primary contact for faculty and staff, offering day-of support in locating lab, research, or classroom materials and ordering materials as needed.

  • Resolve logistical problems related to supply chain gaps, storage, and equipment needs.

  • Lead lab and storage protocol orientations for faculty, staff, and students.

Classroom Support (30%)

  • Set up, put away, and clean materials from classes and lab spaces, on a flexible schedule to accommodate teaching needs and classroom use.

  • Standardize classroom resources to optimize teaching efficiency and accessibility.

  • Support general classroom and teaching tasks as needed, including scanning, printing, copying, and maintaining clean and stocked teaching spaces.

  • Drive SKC vehicles to transport students, instructors, and gear for class field trips.

Research Support (30%)

  • Provide support to the Research PI and Research Coordinator to operate the Wildlife and Fisheries/Climate Learning Hub Research Program including developing and organizing research learning materials for students.

  • Mentor and assist undergraduate students with independent thesis research.

  • Assist with organizing research equipment and databases, data collection processes, and team logistics.

  • Provide alumni-to-student mentorship for internship participants informally and through organized meetings.

  • Create research summaries and deliverables.

  • Drive SKC vehicles safely in adverse field conditions on unimproved roads.

  • Maintain ongoing collaborative work relationships with Natural Resources faculty members, students, supporting faculty and external partnerships.

Recruitment, Outreach, Professional Development, and SKC/Community Service (10%)

  • Demonstrate a knowledge of and commitment to the mission and goals of SKC.

  • Plan for and engage in department recruitment and educational activities including photographs, promotional materials, speaking to campus guests, supporting community events, and other programs as required.

  • Promote regional tribal community awareness of SKC Undergraduate and Graduate Programs, and continually learn and support Native American culture relating to Natural Resources.

  • Serve on college committees, attend staff meetings, participate in SKC community service, and pursue job related professional development opportunities.

  • Collaborate regularly with supervisor to plan, implement and participate in weekly, quarterly, annually, and long-term goals, evaluations, and required assessments.

  • Build and enhance inter-departmental, local and regional partnerships to strengthen the department and student skillsets.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Wildlife and Fisheries, Wildlife Biology, or a closely related field;

  • Minimum of one year of closely related professional work experience;

  • Knowledge of the mission and goals of SKC and the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes Natural Resources programs;

  • Skilled at driving vehicles in adverse conditions on unimproved roads;

  • Experience with equipment, protocols, data collection methods, survey techniques, and data management for a variety of research projects on natural resources topics;

  • Able to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds;

  • Capable of lifting and carrying heavy items (packs and equipment up to 45 pounds) for three or more miles over uneven terrain.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to work independently and cooperatively in a team setting.

  • Reliable, adaptable, and highly organized across multiple active workspaces.

  • Thrive in a fast-paced, constantly shifting environment with a wide range of tasks.
