Position Summary/Description:

Founded in 2015 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's Kenan-Flagler Business School, the Institute for Private Capital ( IPC ) seeks to improve public understanding of the role of private capital in the global economy. Affiliated with the Kenan-Flagler Business School, the IPC is a non-profit, multi-university initiative involving leading scholars in private capital. The IPC provides unbiased and independent research, conducted by its own network of academic affiliates. It offers exclusive access to data for academic research. The IPC relies on support from institute members to help fund their data and research support, and to create a community of practitioners and academics. They work in partnership with their members, offering outreach and education, and developing new research from collaboration and joint projects. 

Current research and work of the IPC are focused on three key areas: private equity, real assets, and active management with alternative assets.

-Private Equity: academic researchers and industry professionals dedicated to advancing research on private equity, private credit, and venture capital. There are over 70 projects completed by more than 90 faculty members, over 50 universities, and more than 20 Ph.D. students.

-Real Assets: The IPC is collecting and curating data on real assets including infrastructure, real estate, and natural resources. Current projects include developing a platform for merging and scrubbing multiple property level sources and building fund-level private infrastructure datasets.

-Active Management with Alternative Assets: Current research projects are aimed at better understanding portfolio management and construction with alternative assets across the liquidity spectrum. 

The Research Assistant Professor, Research Associate Professor, or Research Professor (Economist) will serve in the role of research support for the IPC . In this capacity, they will help direct the IPC's research activities related to its three key areas of research and support efforts to translate academic research findings into actionable recommendations for practitioners and policy makers. This includes producing financial economic and/or econometric analyses as well as related business research publications and products important to the IPC's external reputation. 

The Research Assistant Professor, Research Associate Professor, or Research Professor (Economist) has the following core responsibilities: 

-provide strategic vision, delivery, and leadership on private capital research and related policy initiatives at the IPC

-produce relevant and insightful thought leadership in the area of private markets and related public policy research

-ensure ongoing programmatic excellence, rigorous program evaluation, and consistent quality of private capital research communications

-present private capital policy and business insights to distinguished external audiences and assist in the translation and curation of academic research for various external stakeholders

-facilitate and continue to foster relationships that provide support for the IPC in order to achieve its strategic goals

The Research Assistant Professor, Research Associate Professor, or Research Professor (Economist) ultimately seeks to:

-impact and influence the decisions of critical business leaders and local, state, federal, and non-US policymakers

-steward scholarship in relevant academic fields

-achieve relevance of work to the full spectrum of external stakeholders

-become a widely known and trusted resource for objective private capital information and the role of private-sector business in society 

This position works closely with and reports to a research faculty member serving as the research director for the IPC . The position also works with the Executive Director of the IPC , Ph.D. students affiliated with the IPC , and faculty at the Kenan-Flagler Business School and other affiliated business schools.
