Job Description and Duties

This is a 12-month limited term position which may be extended, cancelled, or made permanent at any time.

If becoming permanent, the selected candidate must be eligible for a permanent appointment at the time of the LT appointment or at the time of the conversion.


This position may be filled at one of the following State Fund locations: Bakersfield, Eureka, Fresno, Glendale, Pleasanton, Redding, Riverside, Rohnert Park, San Diego, Sacramento, Stockton or Vacaville.

Are you looking for an exciting and meaningful career leading a team of investigators in the fight against workers’ compensation fraud? State Fund’s Special Investigation Unit (SIU) is looking for a Supervising Special Investigator I who has extensive workers’ compensation insurance experience and knowledge, with exceptional interpersonal communication and relationship building skills. The ideal candidate has knowledge and experience in investigating various types of suspected workers ‘compensation fraud involving injured workers, employers and providers. Understanding of the criminal justice system and the California workers’ compensation system is critical.


The incumbent will work closely with other internal State Fund business partners and stakeholders along with external partners including various local and state law enforcement agencies, and other industry Special Investigations Units.


Under the direction of the Senior Managers and Senior Vice President of SIU, the Supervising Special Investigator I (Non-Peace Officer) will be responsible for leading and supporting a team of Special Investigators in the investigation of suspected workers’ compensation fraud.   • Manage projects, meet deadlines, and contribute to special projects on department and industry-wide issues and initiatives
  • Ability to recruit, train, and retain competent staff
  • Ability to evaluate SIU staff and provide feedback
  • Ability and willingness to travel (including overnight travel)

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience with California workers’ compensation insurance investigations.
  • Proficient knowledge of at least 3 years of the California Workers’ Compensation system including Codes, Rules and Regulations.
  • Knowledge of various investigative resources, including open-source and industry databases.

New to state candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of the alternate salary range when applicable. Placement to alternate salary range may be based on education or experience identified in your state application.
